As Indigenous athletes, coaches, and volunteers in our community, we have a unique opportunity to lead a positive impact on the environment through our actions both on and off the field.

Here are some sport-specific tips on how we can treat our Earth well:

  • Cycling & Running: Opt for eco-friendly transportation options like cycling or running if possible. Not only do these activities promote personal health, but they also reduce carbon emissions and help keep our air clean.
  • Outdoor Sports: Whether you're hiking, hunting, canoeing, or playing outdoor sports like soccer or softball, always respect nature and leave no trace. Do not leave garbage like water bottles, plastic wrappers, or trash behind on benches or on the ground. Stay on trails when possible, and avoid disturbing wildlife habitats.
  • Community Clean-Ups: Organize or participate in community clean-up events to keep parks, trails, and sports fields in your community litter-free. Take pride in your local environment and inspire others to do the same.
  • Water Sports: If you enjoy water sports like swimming, canoeing, or fishing, be mindful of water conservation efforts. Avoid polluting waterways with trash and chemicals, and support initiatives that protect marine ecosystems like wiping down boats after use and not using recreational equipment in more than one waterway.
  • Sustainable Events: When hosting or attending sports events, prioritize sustainability by providing clean and accessible water sources, encouraging teams to clean up after themselves and throw their trash in a bin, and encouraging teams to carpool whenever possible.

Together, let's use the power of sports to promote environmental stewardship and create a healthier, more sustainable planet for all. Happy Earth Day!
